Joule Thief - Jeanna's Light

Power a CFL bulb using 1.5v !

Today I'll show - How to light a CFL bulb using two 1.5v AA batteries !
Its Easy !

Materials Required
  • Two 1.5 volt AA batteries
  • Battery holder (for your convenience)
  • Switch  (for your convenience)
  • Power Transistor like 2N3055
  • Variable Transistor/Potentiometer of 100 ohms
  • Ferrite Core donut shaped
  • Wires - 30 gauge magnet wire, 18 gauge wire (with thick plastic insulation,Colors -Black and Blue)
  • A gutted CFL bulb

Assembly Instructions

Circuit diagram

1. First take ferrite core (doughnut shaped) and wind it with 256 turns of 30 gauge magnet wire and stop winding when there is a gap of 2mm (c). Then solder both the ends with a thicker insulated wire (red colored).

(c)

Soldering it with thicker insulated wire

2.
Wind 10 turns of a plastic insulated wire 18 gauge on top of the first winding.

3.Wind 5 turns of a plastic insulated wire 18 gauge on top of the second winding.

4.Now connect the Blue wire's one end with the resistor and another end with the Base - B of the transistor.

5.Connect Black wire with the Collector - C of the Transistor (and the other end of it with the switch if you want)
6.Next Connect the negative point of the battery with the transistor's Emitter - E and the positive with the switch.

7.Connect green outlined wires as in the image below.
8.Finally Connect the gutted  CFL's both the end with  the red wire(which has 256 turns).
Test it Whether you have done all the things correctly and light the CFL with 1.5v Batteries !!!
You can close it  in a box or a can, It depends on you.
